Abstract
The Auchincruive is a good example of the plain style of book labels. Auchincruive is a former country house and estate in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It was once the residence of Richard Oswald (1705–1784), a Scottish merchant, slave trader, and advisor to the British government on trade regulations and the conduct of the American War of Independence. The Oswald library was sold by Sotheby’s in 1922, and sometime after that Esmond de Beer acquired it. He may have paid the price of two guineas pencilled on the endpaper.
