Abstract
Cipher or monogram? According to David Pearson, a monogram consists of two or more letters superimposed so that the letters merge with one another. A cipher has superimposed letters that remain distinct. There is often repetitive symmetry, and a mirror effect. Some owners add their names to the label. In this instance, working out the owner’s initials, and then their name is a complex task. The ‘Stephens’ may be sculptor and artist Edward Bowring Stephens (1815-1882).
