On 3 September 1773, Captain Furneaux accepted on board a young man called Omai, from Rai’atea. Taken back to England, Omai became a social celebrity, meeting Joseph Banks, Lord Sandwich, Frances Burney, and at Kew, King George III. To the latter, as he bowed and grasped the King’s hand, Omai was said to have declared ‘How do King Tosh!’ Omai was returned to Tahiti with Cook during the third voyage in 1776.
