Linda Bryder writes in her A Voice for Mothers that Plunket is ‘New Zealand’s most successful voluntary organisation and certainly its most famous’. Indeed, everyone knows ‘Plunket’ is the Society which, as described on their website, is the ‘largest provider of support services for the development, health and well-being of children under 5’ in New Zealand. The Society has come a long way from its strict and almost paternalistic beginnings to a community-focused group that caters for all families and their children regardless of race and socio-economic status.
