The Department of Health of Ontario put this childcare booklet out in the 1930s under the aegis of the then minister, Dr John Morrow Robb (1876-1942). Although the booklet makes no mention of Truby King as such, much of the content echoes his philosophies on health and well-being for mothers and babies. The text advises that breast-feeding is best but strictly only every four hours; that babies need lots of fresh air and sunshine; that the condition of babies teeth is hugely influenced by the ‘diet of mother during pregnancy’; and that if ‘properly trained’ babies will be well-behaved. One somewhat alarming piece of advice is included: if your baby holds its breath while he cries and begins to turn ‘black’, toss him in the air (‘this will make him gasp and catch his breath’) or throw cold water in his face!
