Truby King had many motives in his crusade to improve the health of children: he believed that right nutrition guarded against insanity; he was worried that sickly children grew into sickly adults who would not make good soldiers to protect against the then Empire-wide fear of the ‘Yellow Peril’; and he actually cared that too many babies were dying. In 1908, he funded the publication of his Feeding and Care of Baby, giving all profits to the Plunket Society. It became the standard text for every Plunket nurse and mother. With a new edition nearly every year, it was sold in places as far apart as Valparaiso and Dublin. This 1918 London edition shows the ‘before and after’ shots of a baby treated at the Karitane Harris Home.
