After the success of Sweet Thames Run Softly, Gibbings received increasing numbers of requests for public lectures, broadcasts for the BBC, and commissions for articles. He also continued to produce his own books. In the early 1950s he spent a lot of time on the Continent – Coming Down the Seine (1953) and Trumpets from Montparnasse (1955) were the result.
