Known as the father of nuclear physics, Rutherford accumulated honours: knighthood (1914); President of the Royal Society (1925-30); Order of Merit (1925); peerage (Baron Rutherford of Nelson) in 1931. Importantly, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908; and in 1911, he theorized that atoms have their charge concentrated in a very small nucleus, thus pioneering the Rutherford model of the atom. He died in October 1937 and was buried at Westminster Abbey, near the tomb of Sir Isaac Newton. This photograph of Rutherford was found in Mellor’s own papers.
