From small beginnings as a seminary in 1477, the Imperial College London (strictly The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine) has developed into a major research institution. The transformation involved various medical schools, the Royal College of Chemistry (1845), the Royal School of Mines (1851), the merger of the latter two to form the Royal College of Science (1881), and the formation of the City and Guilds of London Institute for the Advancement of Technical Education (CGLI); all of which were incorporated by Royal Charter into the Imperial College of Science and Technology, effective in 1910. In October 1933, Mellor was asked to represent the New Zealand Government on the Board of Governors of the College. Barring the fact that an early invitation went astray, his nomination to this distinguished post was eventually accepted.
