Dunedin-born political caricaturist, Sir David Alexander Cecil Low (1891-1963) had his first work published when he was eleven. Low moved to England in 1919 and became a member of the National Liberal Club in 1921. While no evidence is extant, it is surely certain that Low and Mellor were acquainted. This caricature of Professor Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett (1897-1974) is by Low. Blackett was a physicist who worked with Ernest Rutherford in the Cavendish Laboratory for ten years from 1921. Blackett’s work in experimental nuclear physics earned him a Nobel Prize in 1948 and he was made a peer in 1969, an honour he had refused five years earlier.
