Joseph Mellor’s reply to his ‘dear old chess pals’ says it all. It was a game he enjoyed, and seemingly played well. In 1945, after Mellor’s death in 1938, Emma Mellor sent boxes of materials to Dr Skinner at the Otago Museum, some of which were destined for the Otago Chess Club.
