Sanctioned by Tsar Alexander I, Captain Ivan Krusenstern was given command of two English vessels, Nadezhda and Neva, to circumnavigate the globe, the first such by the Russians. As was typical of this period, the expedition (1803-06) had a strong trade emphasis: Russian trade with Japan, Hawaii, South America, and the consolidation of the Russo-American fur trade in the Pacific Northwest. Krusenstern visited Tonga, the Marquesas, and the Hervey Islands, which he changed to the ‘Cook’ Islands. The success of the expedition is retold in this memoir by his daughter.
