Abstract

Personnel on Cook’s second voyage included James Burney, George Vancouver, Anders Sparrman, astronomers William Bayly and William Wales, artist William Hodges, who was pre-disposed to painting natives in Grecian robes, and the German naturalist Johann Rheinhold Forster and his son Johann Georg. Wales offered a reality check against Bougainville’s description of Tahitians: ‘The wriggling of their hips, especially as set off with such a quantity of furbelows, is too ludicrous to be pleasing and the distortion of their mouths is really disagreeable.’ Georg Forster’s account met with considerable success. Here is his record of visiting Easter Island.
