Personnel on Cook’s second voyage included James Burney, George Vancouver, Anders Sparrman, astronomers William Bayly and William Wales, artist William Hodges, who was pre-disposed to painting natives in Grecian robes, and the German naturalist Johann Rheinhold Forster and his son Johann Georg. Wales offered a reality check against Bougainville’s description of Tahitians: ‘The wriggling of their hips, especially as set off with such a quantity of furbelows, is too ludicrous to be pleasing and the distortion of their mouths is really disagreeable.’ Georg Forster’s account met with considerable success.
