Description
On mount in ink: T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Born at Greenock Aug 25 1799, educated at Glasgow University, died at Sydney Aug.t 8 1878. He arrived at Sydney in 1823 introducing the Presbyterian church & school system & in 1832 establishing the Australian College. A great Colonist of fine public spirit he was undoubtedly a member of the church militant- always in political or other hot water. To set forth his special views, he started in 1835 a weekly journal, the Colonist & advocated the Wakefield systm of colonization, continuous & extensive emigration & latterly separation from the home country. He was a prolific writer. In 1839 he published his Four Letters to Lord Durham in which, narrowly avoiding libel, he severely castigates the New Zealand Mission. It is an interesting historical pamphlet. T.M.H.; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki.
