Description

Village of Te Ruatitoko in foreground.
Correspondence: 25 September 1923, to Dr James Johnstone, B.A., F.R.C.S., Richmond, England,
Dear Sir,... your letter to Dr Fulton which was printed in the ODT Aug 15 in which you describe the original watercolour from which the litho. in the Atlas Pittoresque of D'Urville's second voyage was made. There can be no doubt that the Hocken Library is the proper place for your watercolour. I know well the Museum Book Shop in Museum Street, from which your Bury Street man evidently purchased the picture.

Port Chalmers, 31 January 1925, To The Secretary, Hocken Library, Otago Museum, Dunedin,
Dear Sir, At the request of my son, Dr Johnstone, of Richmond, England, I am sending to the Hocken Library a watercolour picture of part of the Dunedin Harbour of Otago, painted in 1840. I have, at the request of my son, presented the picture to the University Council to form part of - to be added - the Hocken Collection. I have written to the Chancellor of the University, believing that the picture is of considerable historic value. Yours faithfully, Margaret Johnstone.
