Lower left (l.l.) in ink over wash: E.M. Hocken; margin below image in ink: George Rennie T.M. Hocken; label in iron gall ink: making a move - very truly yours, George Rennie Jr; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: George Rennie born at Phantasrie 1801, died at London 1860. Originated the New Edinburgh or Otago Scheme in 1842 though soon superseded by Cap Cargill & Rev. T. Burns & was appointed Governor of the Falkland Islands in 1847. I procured from his son, Sir Richard Rennie, the gift of his portrait now in the Dunedin Art Gallery. T.M.H
