Lower right (l.r.) in ink: T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Edmund Storr Halswell, B.A. of Cambridge, a barrister & elected F.R.S. in April 1834 was appointed by the NZ Company in 1840 Commissioner for the Management of Lands reserved for the natives. He was engaged in important land transactions for some years & left for England in 1846. A daughter was married to Victor Firmin Martin well known in early Otago days. T.M.H.
