Arthur Beverly (1822–1907) was a Dunedin watchmaker and property investor who was very skilled in scientific matters. Indeed, his two passions were mathematics and botany. When he died in October 1907, he bequeathed his scientific instruments and the bulk of his estate, valued at £57,000, to the University. It was to be directed to ‘the teaching of mathematical, mechanical, and physical sciences and subjects akin thereto’. The Beverley bequest is still funding university prizes and Fellowships in physics and maths.
