In 1862, Edinburgh-educated physician and botanist William Lauder Lindsay (1829-1880) visited Dunedin. In talks given, he strongly advocated the establishment of a local museum and a university. His pronouncements did not fall on deaf ears. Lindsay’s own, Contributions to New Zealand Botany, was published in 1868, and it was promptly ordered for the Institute Library. This is the Institute copy, as listed on page 11 in the 1879 Catalogue. Here is a superbly colourful illustration of Aciphylla colensoi (Speargrass or Spaniard) drawn by the Scottish illustrator Walter Hood Fitch (1817–1892).
