This volume is one of the publications that resulted from Dr Jean-Baptiste Charcot’s second expedition to Antarctica, from 1908 to 1910. Charcot (1867-1936) was a trained medical doctor, but it was as an expeditionary scientist that he would make his name. Aboard his well-equipped ship, the Pourquoi-pas?, Charcot and his crew charted and named various islands in the Antarctic. They also made scientific observations and collected enough data to fill twelve volumes of reports. This plate shows the fin whale (figs. 1 and 2, Balaenoptera physalus) and the baleen whale (fig. 3, Balaenoptera borealis).
