Voyages and travels
Description
An account of the resource
Surgeon James Johnson (1777-1845) was on board the 36 gun ship Caroline, commanded by B. W. Page. Dedicated to Henry Lord Viscount Melville, this work contains a topographical and picturesque sketch of all the places annually visited by the British East India and China fleets, including Madeira, Ceylon, Madras, Bengal, Malacca, Sumatra, Macao and Canton. After sailing through a typhoon, the Caroline eventually arrived at Canton, in early December 1804.
According to Johnson, 'Hog-lane' was the sailor's pleasure-spot, where they would lose their money and get drunk. Anecdotes abound of incidents between the Chinese and the English 'tars'.

'To the Chancellor of the Otago University -- Sir -- Having passed the necessary preliminary examination, I desire to enter myself as a student in the medical school of the Otago University, with the view ultimately of proceeding to a degree in medicine. As I understand that up to this time no women have taken the course for a medical degree, I should be glad to learn whether it is competent for me to attend the medical classes, and, in case of my successfully passing the examinations, to take a degree in medicine. -- I am, Sir -- Your obedt sevt. -- Emily Siedeberg'.

An account of the resource
"In Mr Heine's notes we find the following in reference to this bird: 'I found this species in various places around Macao. Like nearly all the other birds, it had retired to the rocky hills, where it hopped gaily from bough to bough, or flitted from rock to rock, sometimes solitary, but frequently in pairs. Its movements were short, and sometimes eccentric. When anything unusual attracted its attention, it raised its crest, and looked at the object with an expression of intense curiosity.' The figure in our plate is of the size of life, and represents the adult male" (Perry, 1856, v.II, 241).

Description
An account of the resource
From the middle of the seventeenth to the beginning of the nineteenth-century, Japan, through the Tokugawa Shōgunate, was successful in rigorously enforcing a policy of seclusion. No Europeans were allowed into Japan except the Dutch who were allowed to land a ship every yEar In July 1853 Commodore Matthew Perry, with a squadron of four ships-of-war entered Uraga Bay, just south of Yokohama. He returned the next year and a treaty was signed to allow the opening of Shimoda (south of Numazu and Mishima) and Hakodate (on Hokkaido) to ships seeking provisions. This contact represented the 'opening' of Japan (Dai Nippon) to the modern world.

"About this period a mutual friendship began to exist between us; confidence took place of timidity; and now, instead of permitting only a few to visit the shore at a time, they fitted up the garden of a temple as a sort of general arsenal for us; the habitations of the priests were allotted as an hospital for the side, whilst other temporary buildings of bamboo were erected for the reception of our powder, which required airing, and for the various stores wanting inspection and repair."
