Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. He was also a skilled cartoonist and his <em>Uncle Joe’s Nonsense</em> (1934) contains a collection of humorous stories illustrated with clever pen sketches. It then deals with his marriage to Emma Cranwell Bakes, his many publications and relationships with his publishers, his contemporaries and friends such as Bernard Moore, Frank Wedgwood, and Louis Solon, and his involvement in various ceramic societies world-wide. And then there is his legacy, which constitutes today annual memorial lectures associated with the Ceramic Society in England and the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, a Mellor Professorship at the University of Otago, and a Mellor street and park in the suburb of Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin. His personal archives, ceramics and books are found at Special Collections, University of Otago, the Otago Museum, and the Heritage Collection, Dunedin Public Library.

R. E. Corbett MSc (NZ) PhD (Cantab) FNZIC FRSNZ. Professor Ted Corbett’s research was in the field of Natural Products. Early in his career he investigated Penicillia mould metabolites, Puberulic, Puberulonic, and Stipitatic acids and showed that they had a new type of molecular skeleton. He went on to study essential oils, steam distilled from a number of New Zealand native plants. Attention was also turned to extractives from leaves, heartwoods, barks and lichens. The structures of numerous new and derivatives of known sesqui-di- and tri-terpenoids were determined.

H. N. Parton MSc (NZ) PhD (Lond) HonDSc (Cant) FNZIC OBE. Professor Hugh Parton’s field of research was the physical chemistry of solutions, particularly non-ideal solutions and the thermodynamics of electrolyte solutions. His intellectual interests extended beyond physical chemistry to such areas as the history and philosophy of science and the aims of university education. He wrote a number of books on these subjects such as <em>Science is Human</em>, <em>The University of New Zealand</em> and <em>The First Eighty Years of Chemistry at the University of Canterbury</em>. His keen interest in matters of academic policy led to membership of a number of university committees and a period as Pro-Vice Chancellor.

Professor David Buckingham’s research involved mechanistic coordination chemistry with emphasis on the preparation and reactions of cobalt(III) complexes including their use in preparing peptides. Other work included research into fundamental chromium(VI) chemistry, attempts to understand the molecular basis for the use of titanium in transplant bone-marrow surgery, and the preparation of bi-metallic porphyrin models for cytochrome C.

L. R. Hanton BSc (Hons)(Otago) PhD (Cantab) FNZIC. Professor Lyall Hanton’s research is concerned with the structure and function of extended chemical systems, with the aim of developing new advanced materials. His interests include extended metal-organic arrays, polymers and gels. Metal-organic arrays can be engineered to contain cavities and channels to hold and store targeted solvent or gas molecules. His research team is working to incorporate certain metal-organic systems into polymer gels to develop ‘wetware actuators’. They are also developing tough hydrogels and biopolymer-based surgical gels for wound healing applications.

R. A. J. Smith BSc (Hons) PhD (Otago) FNZIC FRSNZ MRSC. Professor Rob Smith initially investigated basic aspect of organometallic chemistry as applied to organic synthesis. More recently his research was directed towards linking organic chemistry with other areas of biological science and developing small molecule pharmaceuticals. Some of these compounds have been developed as pharmaceutical drug candidates in conjunction with Antipodean Pharmaceuticals Inc. One compound MitoQ has been involved in Phase II clinical trials for effectiveness against Parkinson’s Disease and Hepatitis C.

A.D. Campbell MSc PhD (NZ) FNZIC ARIC OBE. Professor Arthur Campbell’s research was initially concerned with carboxylic acid derivatives but developed into an interest in organic micro analysis. He developed a wide range of analytical procedures and worked to improve techniques for the analysis of perfluorinated organic compounds and sub-micro methods. He held a number of important roles associated with laboratory testing in New Zealand. Internationally, he was a Bureau Member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The Campbell Micro Analytical Laboratory at the University of Otago is named in his honour.

Professor Brian Robinson’s areas of research covered core areas of inorganic and organometallic chemistry involving synthetic, mechanistic and structural studies. These have ranged from the design of non-linear optical materials incorporating metal clusters to investigations of platinum chemistry related to drug synthesis. He has conducted pioneering work in academic science administration and quality advancement, public safety of chemicals, and political education on hazardous materials. He also transformed academic chemistry into commercially realistic ventures.

Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. Emma Mellor visited Dunedin in 1945 and arranged for papers, photographs, books, and ceramics from the Mellor estate to go to Special Collections, University of Otago, the Otago Museum, and the Heritage Collections, Dunedin Public Library. Some 78 ceramics went to the Otago Museum, including a small gold flambé vase, a silver wedding vase from Pilkinton, Manchester, a coffee cup and saucer from Limoges, France, an American glass candlestick, and a crude vase made in Assisi, Italy. Also in the Mellor gift was this decorative Japanese bowl.

While this floral platter-plate is termed ‘Dresden’, it was actually made in Meissen, some 25 kilometres northwest of Dresden, Germany. Almost all ‘Dresden’ porcelain was produced in Meissen and sold in Dresden, which was the cultural and economic centre of Saxony. This colourful platter-plate – once owned by Mellor – contains the distinctive blue crown Dresden mark, which was established by the industry about 1883.

This 19th century Chinese porcelain teapot is from Jingdezhen, a city synonymous with ceramics. The city is believed to have been producing fine ware from as early as the 6th century. This teapot was probably part of Mellor’s reference collection of ceramic items. After his death in 1938, Emma Mellor donated it (and others) to the Otago Museum.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Josiah Wedgwood began working in his father’s pottery from the age of nine and in 1768 he built a factory near Stoke-on-Trent which he called ‘Etruria’. For the next 175 years Wedgwood pottery was produced there; in 1940 the factory was moved to the village of Barlaston in Staffordshire. The mark on the bottom of this Wedgwood bone china cup and saucer dates it to between 1891 and 1908, as it was in 1891 that ‘England’ first appeared on the Wedgwood mark. In 1908 the mark was replaced by ‘Made in England’. The tea and breakfast service from which this set comes was apparently a favourite of Frank Wedgwood’s.

This ‘Tuscan China’ tea pot was donated by Emma Mellor to the Otago Museum in the 1950s and was made by R.H. and S.L. Plant (Ltd) in the town of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent in about the 1920s. The Plant family had been active in the Staffordshire pottery industry since about 1775 but their business was founded in 1878. They used white china clay to produce their ‘Tuscan China’ range with about 30,000 different patterns emerging over the years. The company traded until the late 1960s when it was absorbed by the Wedgwood group.

Mellor was an elected member or honorary member of a number of Ceramic Societies, viz., the British Ceramic Society (1905), the American Ceramic Society (1932), German Ceramic Society (1935); Czechoslovakian Ceramic Society (1935) and the Canadian Ceramic Society (1937). This orange dog is Czechoslovakian in origin and is likely to have been given to Mellor when he was made an Honorary Member of the Czechoslovakian Ceramic Society in September 1935. The dog was one of many ceramic items donated to the Otago Museum by Emma Mellor after Joseph Mellor’s death in 1938.

In 1932, Joseph Mellor was, ‘in recognition of achievements of exceptional value in ceramics’, made an honorary member of the American Ceramic Society. Perhaps some American members were present at the annual banquet of the Ceramic Society (UK) in November 1935. Mellor was present, and he no doubt enjoyed the joke told by Ceramic Society President C.R.F. Threfall that ‘To call a man a brick is a universally accepted compliment; to be called a regular brick is even a greater compliment.’

This blue Leeds Fireclay Company bowl was owned by Mellor and gifted to the Otago Museum by his wife, Emma, in 1945. The possession of it is understandable given Mellor’s interest in refractory materials in furnaces and kilns. Fireclay (hydrous silicates of aluminium; Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O) was discovered in a coal mine by William Wilcox and John Lassey in 1859. It can withstand very high temperatures.

Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. He was also a skilled cartoonist and his <em>Uncle Joe’s Nonsense</em> (1934) contains a collection of humorous stories illustrated with clever pen sketches. Just before Mellor died in May 1938, he received a C.B.E. <br /><br /><em>The World of Joseph W. A summary of the resource.
This 18th century porcelain plate was produced in Jingdezhen in the Jiangxi region in the northeast of China. Jingdezhen is known as the ‘Porcelain Capital’ and it is thought that high quality, fine china has been produced there for almost 2000 years. More commonly associated with blue and white coloured wares, pottery has been exported from the area as early as the 13th century and Marco Polo (1254-1324) mentioned the quality of the porcelain in his <em>Travels of Marco Polo</em>. Nothing is known of this particular plate or how Mellor came to have it in his collection but he was no doubt attracted by its vibrant colour palette.

This diagram shows the basic tetrahedral SiO4 building block (Fig. 51) and α-quartz (Fig. 235), β-quartz (Fig. 236), β-cristobalite (Fig. 236) and β-tridymite (Fig. 237). Polymorphs have the same chemical formulae but different structures. Mellor describes the significance of these forms in the glazing process. 'Nature has set limits of temperature within which each form of silica is stable. If these limits be exceeded, the silica becomes unstable and undergoes a molecular cataclysm, whereby the structural units rearrange themselves of their own accord, slowly or quickly, according to a different architectural plan, so as to produce another kind of silica which is stable only in a new range of temperature' (Mellor, <em>Crazing and Peeling of Glazes</em>, 1935).
