Dr Hocken's Original Pictures
Description
An account of the resource
This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.

Description
An account of the resource
As sketched by our own artist at ten oclock pm Monday 30th June 1884. Lister Hutton & Co Litho.
Through image on stone: They’re a coming. Hang Compromise, Pull ’em over. Warm work, but I suppose it’s all right. Fish Says so. Gentlemen, I assure you I have no personal feeling, but I like to win. Now then all together, One more, Pull for Tea and Temperance. They shall be virtuous. It may be injustice, but we will teach them to tread on our corns. An elder of the church trying to ruin me and my big family. Ten oclock, other side please. Think of the suffering masses on our right hand and on our left. A very pretty quarrel, but it’s no use interfering. No they call it a step in the right direction. Let them take it by themselves.
