Title
A name given to the resource
He Tirohanga Ki Muri: A View of the Past
Description
An account of the resource
"E kore e ngaro; te kakano i ruia mai i Ra' iatea.
I shall never be lost; the seed that was sown from Ra' iatea."
The image of a waka en passage across the sea is a metaphor for an individuals' life journey through time. As the waka traverses the ocean the wake generated by the canoe in motion symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge. Sea spray thrown up by the prow of the canoe soars above. Illuminated by the suns rays, a rainbow appears, the individual is ready, knowledge becomes wisdom and life's journey is rewarded.
'He tirohanga ki muri ~ A view of the past' is an attempt to capture and convey a selection of Maori heritage materials from the Hocken Library, which not only speak of important events and relationships, but also acknowledge the mana, (prestige, dignity and authority) of our ancestors through the words and wisdom they have left behind. They provide us with glimpses into our rich heritage and are a remarkable record of our ancestors' opinions, lives and feelings. It is hoped that by bringing together these taonga we add further depth and understanding to our journey in the pursuit of knowledge.

Map of the Hokianga Harbour, n.d.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In 1823 the Wesleyan Missionary Society joined the Church Missionary Society in the Northern region of New Zealand. Initially a mission station was established at Whangaroa Harbour, against the advice of Hongi Hika and subsequently this station was abandoned in 1827. The Wesleyans were then re-established in and around the Hokianga Harbour in 1828 under the protection of the Rangatira (Chief) Patuone. This map of the Hokianga Harbour shows the number of Wesleyan Chapels in the Hokianga as well as the extent of cultivations in the area.

Dr Hocken's Original Pictures
Description
An account of the resource
This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.

Description
An account of the resource
Colin McCahon is recognized as one of New Zealand’s foremost painters for his inventive and visionary contribution to art. He lived from 1919 to 1987, his career spanning four decades of the Twentieth Century. His landscapes reflect his environmental concerns, but also a recognition of the raw essence of a young country, and an ability to portray New Zealand in a unique and iconic way. Religious and moral issues are explored throughout McCahon’s work, as evidenced by his use of Christian imagery. Another of McCahon's interests was poetry, and he became the first New Zealand artist to incorporate words and numbers in his work.

Correspondence: 25 September 1923, to Dr James Johnstone, B.A., F.R.C.S., Richmond, England,
Dear Sir,... your letter to Dr Fulton which was printed in the ODT Aug 15 in which you describe the original watercolour from which the litho. in the Atlas Pittoresque of D'Urville's second voyage was made. There can be no doubt that the Hocken Library is the proper place for your watercolour. I know well the Museum Book Shop in Museum Street, from which your Bury Street man evidently purchased the picture.
Port Chalmers, 31 January 1925, To The Secretary, Hocken Library, Otago Museum, Dunedin,
Dear Sir, At the request of my son, Dr Johnstone, of Richmond, England, I am sending to the Hocken Library a watercolour picture of part of the Dunedin Harbour of Otago, painted in 1840. I have, at the request of my son, presented the picture to the University Council to form part of - to be added - the Hocken Collection. I have written to the Chancellor of the University, believing that the picture is of considerable historic value. Yours faithfully, Margaret Johnstone.

This will then afford great benefit both to the Ass.n & the colonist. N.B. To be got up in plain outline. William Holmes, Grammar School- Lyttelton- March 1851. (The above key & the sketches to which they refer, with the exceptions of Nos 5, 6, 9, 10 & 11 which were not sufficiently worth copying, are copies of the originals lent to me by the Rev Prebendary Jackson, 29 Mecklenburg Square, London, a prebendary of S. Paul’s Cathedral London & a son of the Rev. Thos Jackson, Bishop Designate of Lyttelton. Mr Holmes accompanied Bp Des. J. out to Canterbury & was a schoolmaster of the Ass.n I have had the copies lithographed. The Assn got into so much pecuniary difficulty that it was doubtless impossible to comply with Mr Holmes request to have these sketches published. T.M.Hocken, London Dec 15 1903).
