Charting the Land on the Ocean: Pacific Exploration, 1520-1876. Online exhibition
Description
An account of the resource
On 28 November 1520, Magellan sailed through the straits that would bear his name into the great expansive waters he dubbed ‘Mar Pacifico’. His venture opened up the exploration of the southern seas, a vast tract of water with numerous islands dotted about, most uncharted. Politically and commercially-driven expeditions then began that put shape to continents and the (re-) discovery of these islands. Notable first explorers included Mendaña de Neira, Sir Francis Drake, Abel Tasman, William Dampier, Samuel Wallis and Philip Carteret; the latter two discovering Tahiti and Pitcairn respectively.
Scientific expeditions began with Bougainville and Cook, each aided by the improvements in navigational equipment, and with institutional backing that employed a full contingent of artists, draughtsmen and botanists to help record and collect.
Cook travelled hundreds of miles throughout the Pacific in the course of his three voyages. By the time of his death in 1779, the map of the Pacific was practically as it is now. It is no wonder that La Pérouse (1785) once said: ‘Cook had left me nothing but to admire.’
Other voyages of exploration then followed, including those commanded by Malaspina (1789), d’Entrecasteaux (1791), Kotzebue (1815-18; 1825-26), Freycinet (1817-20), Dumont d’Urville, and the later United States Exploring Expedition.
The exhibition ‘Charting the Land on the Ocean: Pacific Exploration, 1520-1876’ features books and maps found in the Hocken Collections, the Science Library and Special Collections, University of Otago. Although the exhibition is by necessity selective, three goals are paramount: to highlight through their publications the brave endeavours of these explorers; to reveal the steady charting of the Pacific; and to remind everyone that these resources do exist, and can be viewed, touched, read, and enjoyed.

Botany: Our Heritage, Our Future. A Celebration of Teaching and Research at the University of Otago. Online Exhibition
Description
An account of the resource
Botany is a 21st century subject built on a rich heritage contributed to and developed by many. Although botany was taught at the University of Otago from the outset, it was in 1924 that the Botany Department was established, with the appointment of Dr J. E. Holloway. From his one ‘all-purpose’ room Holloway instructed others in the subject that involves the scientific study of plant life. After Holloway’s retirement in 1944, a number of dedicated staff kept the department functioning until 1946 when Geoff Baylis arrived as Head of the Department (HoD). He became the first Professor of Botany in 1952. Baylis was replaced by Professor Peter Bannister in 1979, who was HoD until 2003, when Associate Professor Paul Guy took over. Professor Bastow Wilson replaced Guy as HoD in 2008. Professor Jim Simpson became HoD in 2010, and Professor Katharine Dickinson in 2011.
Since 1924, students have been exposed to all aspects of the life of plants, algae, fungi, and other closely related organisms. Today’s student engages in a subject that is now multidisciplinary, covering the gene to the ecosystem, and from the mountains to the sea. Of course the Department’s achievements are due to all staff: the technicians, the administrators, and the academics, and each have contributed greatly to the excellence in teaching and research that has been afforded to students, and more broadly to the general public, over many years. The Department is also very appreciative of the significant contributions made by its Emeritus and Honorary Professors, and other research associates.
This exhibition celebrates the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Botany Department at the University of Otago, which remains the only university Department of Botany in New Zealand. The Department is very proud of its heritage, and in looking ahead, considers Botany to be essential to society’s needs more than ever. Indeed, knowledge about plants is fundamental to our survival.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
‘Our collection of plants was now grown so immensely large that it was necessary that some extraordinary care should be taken of them, lest they should spoil in the books. I therefore devoted this day to that business and carried ashore all the drying paper, nearly 200 quires, …spreading them upon a sail in the sun, …often turning them, …By this means they came on board at night in very good condition.’ So Banks wrote at Botany Bay, just after he left New Zealand. Presumably Professor Geoff Baylis had less quantity to deal with, but the exacting process of keeping botanical specimens was no doubt similar. Baylis collected this sample of Cook’s ‘scurvy grass’ (<em>Lepidium oleraceum</em>) in Dunedin in December 1951. Because of its antiscorbutic properties, Cook also used it to ward off scurvy.

He Tirohanga Ki Muri: A View of the Past
Description
An account of the resource
"E kore e ngaro; te kakano i ruia mai i Ra' iatea.
I shall never be lost; the seed that was sown from Ra' iatea."
The image of a waka en passage across the sea is a metaphor for an individuals' life journey through time. As the waka traverses the ocean the wake generated by the canoe in motion symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge. Sea spray thrown up by the prow of the canoe soars above. Illuminated by the suns rays, a rainbow appears, the individual is ready, knowledge becomes wisdom and life's journey is rewarded.
'He tirohanga ki muri ~ A view of the past' is an attempt to capture and convey a selection of Maori heritage materials from the Hocken Library, which not only speak of important events and relationships, but also acknowledge the mana, (prestige, dignity and authority) of our ancestors through the words and wisdom they have left behind. They provide us with glimpses into our rich heritage and are a remarkable record of our ancestors' opinions, lives and feelings. It is hoped that by bringing together these taonga we add further depth and understanding to our journey in the pursuit of knowledge.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Banks’ Florilegium is a collection of 743 copperplate engravings of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander while they accompanied Captain Cook on his voyage around the world between 1768 and 1771. Although extensive work was done on them by Sydney Parkinson and artist-engravers hired by Banks, they were not printed in Banks’ lifetime. Between 1980 and 1990, the British Museum (Natural History) and Alecto published the first complete full colour edition of the Florilegium. On display are a few framed samples from the Hocken Pictorial Collection.

Description
An account of the resource
This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.

Dr Hocken's Original Pictures

An account of the resource
Lower right (l.r.) with brush: Wanganui N. Zealand W. Fox 1857; on sketchbook mount in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: English Church and houses on site of the Avenue. Beyond are two large houses built and fortified in 1847 for the refuge of the inhabitants. Outskirts of the Putiki Pa on the left bank of the Wanganui. T.M. Hocken; label: Na te Hakena tenei tiki; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Wanganui in 1857 drawn by Mr (Sr Wm) Fox. Settlement commenced early when 200 settlers finding they could not gain possession of their sections at Wellington, migrated towards the end of the year. They were always harassed with native trouble & in 1845 the town was stockaded. Matters culminated with the Gilfillan murders in 1847. The Missionary settlement was founded in 1839 at Putiki, the splendid iron bridge 600 feet long was opened in 1871. T.M.H.; on flypage of sketchbook in ink: Thomas Morland Hocken from Sir William Fox. Sir William Fox who well knew the interest I took in old New Zealand & was a frequent visitor at my house, promised to bequeath me these sketches which he commenced to take from the time of his arrival in New Zealand in 1842.
