New Zealand’s Trinity of book collectors marked their books in different ways, thereby signifying ownership with the claim ‘This book is mine!’ Sir George Grey had no bookplate, inscribing his books rarely. Alexander Turnbull had ten different bookplates, one being a ‘rebus’ designed by the artist Walter Crane. Dr T.M. Hocken marked each book he owned many times, often using an Ex libris bookplate (which he was not allowed to carry); a ‘Hakena’ label, ink stamps, and his signature.
Marking ownership (provenance) by inserting bookplates, book labels, stamps or inscriptions into a book is part of a long tradition, begun in the period of the first printing presses (1450s), when multiple copies of books were produced. Book collectors started to amass libraries, either as a resource for their own intellectual pursuits, or just for show. It became chic to have a library, a collection of books and manuscripts. In later times, it was doubly chic to have a prominent artist design your bookplate.
Many of the first bookplates were based on coats of arms that many aristocrats and landed gentry had the right to bear. Mottoes dominated. As time progressed, and book collecting increased, an increasing number of owners did not have coats of arms to adorn their books. Special Collections does not own a collection of bookplates like Auckland City Libraries with their Hilda Wiseman Collection, nor the Auckland Museum Library with its Percy Barnett Collection. Nevertheless, Special Collections has numerous bookplates, book labels, and inscriptions evident in the thousands of books held. On display is a small fraction of the total held, a wide variety of armorial, pictorial, and modern designs representing a wide range of book collectors. What is pleasing are the number of bookplates and labels representing female book collectors, who have traditionally not figured greatly in the field of book collecting. In addition, bookplate samples from the collection of Professor David Skegg have been included. They are particular to the South Island as they feature Otago and Southland bookplate owners.

Here is the bookplate of one ‘John Murray’. The Murray clan in Scotland dates back to the 12th century and in Gaelic Moireabh (which became Murray) means sea-settlement, so it seems fitting a mermaid appears on the Murray badge. The legendary sea creature is portrayed traditionally, as she holds a mirror in her right (dexter) hand and a comb in her left (sinister) hand. The mermaid’s tale rests on a two-toned wreath. The image of the mermaid in Scotland dates back to 400 A.D, and is found on Pictish stone carvings dating from that time. The banner above her head reads ‘Tout prest’ meaning ‘all ready’. So who is the John Murray, that this book belonged to?

This book contains several inscriptions. The dedicatory inscription (top right) reads ‘To Dr+ Mrs Truby King, from F. L.+A.J.H’. As King has inscribed underneath, the book was gifted to the Kings by Australian artist and architect, Albert Hanson (1867-1914), and his wife Frances Lanly (F.L). Hanson spent time in Dunedin in the late 1890s conducting an art school, and may have known the Kings. The book’s author and subject is significant, as Hanson designed a house for Stevenson when he was in Australia, and King studied medicine in Edinburgh. King’s note on the left hand side reminds a ‘Mr Scott’ to return the book to Matron at the Karitane Hospital in Melrose, Wellington. He only had four days to read it!

Abstract

The noted chemist and physicist Robert Boyle (1627–1691) was deeply involved in theology, and Some Considerations, first published in 1681, was one of his treatises written over his lifetime. This third edition was once in the library of Rufford Abbey, an estate in Rufford, Nottinghamshire. In 1931, the estate passed to George Halifax Lumley-Savile, 3rd Baron Savile (1919-2008), who was only 12. By then, however, the Trustees had made a decision to sell the Abbey. The library and all the fittings were sold on 11 October 1938. A large ‘Rufford Abbey’ book label carries a terse reminder to wayward borrowers.

The pictorial devices in an armorial bookplate are usually applicable to one individual, or family. It is possible for a student of provenance (the history of previous ownership), to identify the owner, once the jargon and rules of heraldry are learnt. In Boutell’s classic book on heraldry, he offers a list of crowns and coronets that can appear in a bookplate. Spotting your ‘Baron’ or ‘Earl’ in the royal pecking-order becomes so much easier.

The earliest known examples of printed bookplates are German, and one early advocate was the German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), who produced a bookplate for Nuremberg lawyer Willibald Pirckheimer (1470–1530). While Special Collections has no early German bookplates, it does hold German publications that contain bookplates, which if anything, indicate the traffic of books from place of publication to an owner’s shelves. Most of Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery’s 10,000 books were bequeathed to Christ Church, Oxford, after his death in 1731. On display is a legal work that was not part of the bequest. It was given to his son, to whom he was temporarily estranged. Overleaf and not shown the 5th Earl has written: ‘Orrery. This Book was left me by my Father 1731’. The armorial bookplate was probably affixed after this date.

On display is a small fraction of the total held, a wide variety of armorial, pictorial, and modern designs representing a wide range of book collectors. What is pleasing are the number of bookplates and labels representing female book collectors, who have traditionally not figured greatly in the field of book collecting. In addition, bookplate samples from the collection of Professor David Skegg have been included. They are particular to the South Island as they feature Otago and Southland bookplate owners.
In order to display more bookplates, far more smaller (octavo) format books and much less large format ones have been used. Often found pasted on the front endpaper, these individual design and provenance statements have their own distinct beauty. Please enjoy.

Peter Arcudius (1563-1633) was a Corfu-born Catholic priest who compiled this collection of patristic texts, Opuscula aurea theologica, a reprint of an early edition of 1639. The Corfu connection is intriguing. The bookplate on the front endpaper belongs to Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (1766-1827), who, in 1824, established the Ionian Academy on Corfu. On opening day, this first University established in modern Greece, had 47 students and three faculties: Law, Medicine, and Philosophy. North died in 1827; three years later his library was dispersed.

The Giesens were a prominent musical family in Dunedin. Amsterdam-born Johannes Giesen came to New Zealand in 1958, after working as a concert pianist and newspaper editor in Indonesia. He taught music, as well as art and French, at Otago Boys’ High School. Joan Giesen remains a mystery, but her very stylized bookplate in this Dutch language copy of Ovid’s Amores hints that she was also musical.

Samuel Parr (1747-1825) was an English schoolmaster and minister who, according to the bookseller H.G. Bohn, had an excellent library. Parr modelled himself on Samuel Johnson, although he did not match the Great Cham’s wit and authority. Parr had a simple book label constructed for his library, which was sold in May 1828. There are ten ‘Parr’ books in Special Collections: nine in Shoults, and one once owned by Willi Fels.

Lindsay Rutherford Stewart (1917-2010) was an Invercargill doctor, who retired to Queenstown. He was a keen mountaineer and photographer in his youth. Although photographic bookplates are not common, this is a fine New Zealand example. Both Dr Stewart’s hobbies are represented, and fittingly, the bookplate is pasted into a work on peaks and glaciers. His climbing companion in the photograph was E. O. ‘Jim’ Dawson, who later became a well-known surgeon in Dunedin.

Bookplates are small printed labels that are usually pasted onto the inside front cover of a book. They signify ownership. Often the Latin Ex libris is present, which means ‘from the books or library of’. Even though bookplates display a marked individuality in their design, many of the earlier ones have a marked similarity, especially depicting the coats of arms of owners. This book on the antiquities of Palestrina, by the prelate and antiquarian Joseph Marie Suarès (1599-1677), carries an unidentified coat of arms on its cover. In addition, the title-page contains a printed copy of the famed ‘bee’ coat of arms belonging to Maffeo Barberini (1631-1685), to whom as Prince of Palestrina, the book was dedicated. Suarès was at one stage librarian of the famed Barberini library in Rome.

This edition of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester’s Poems on Several Occasions was given by Gilbert Hobbs to Arscott Bickford (d.1771), son of William Arscott. William Glynn of Glynn, of Cornwall, also owned the book. According to a note within, Glynn was related to the Bickfords through marriage via the Prideaux family. Importantly, Esmond de Beer obtained, either by gift or purchase, some hundreds of books from Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890–1962), the English book collector who collected bad eighteenth century verse. A pencil note marking Williams’s ownership has been added to the label.

Abstract

On the front paste-down of this volume is the bookplate of American artist, Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) and his first wife Esther Tane. Their initials are worked into the design with one of Baskin’s favoured mottos ‘Nihil humanum a me alienum pute’ – a modified quote from Roman playwright, Terence (2nd cent. BC) – meaning ‘nothing human is alien to me’. The bookplate dates from 1950, and the image of the eagle fits with Baskin’s life-long fascination with raptors. In 1942, while studying at Yale, Baskin established Gehanna Press; and in 1952, he published ‘The Candle’, a poem by John Suckling (1609-41), which features in this volume (above) on page 79. This may explain why he once owned this book. The ‘Gift of’ Esmond de Beer bookplate is pasted on the adjacent page.

This catalogue of the Arundel Marbles (‘inscriptions on stone…of immense historical importance’) was once part of the Bibliotheca Colbertina, belonging to Jean Baptiste Colbert (1619-83): just evident from ripped corner. As Finance Minister to Louis XIV, he amassed a personal library of over 20,000 volumes. Upon his death, the library passed down to Colbert’s descendants. In 1728, the library was sold in Paris. The book was somehow acquired by the antiquary William Henry Black (1808-72), who was a tutor in London by age 17, had Latin, Hebrew, and Greek, and published a work on Arundel’s Manuscripts. This book was in his library from 1824. Shoults’s stamp is above Black’s ownership inscription.

It may be coincidence, but one strand of the Bulkeley family was attached by marriage to the powerful Griffith family of Penrhyn.

Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872) was a bibliomaniac who wanted to own one of every book in the world. He was also obsessed with manuscripts. During a lifetime of collecting, Phillipps amassed some 40,000 printed books and 60,000 manuscripts. When he vacated Middle Hill, Worcestershire for Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham, some 105 horse-drawn wagons were required to transfer the collection. The eventual dispersal of his collection took over 100 years. Many of his books had a characteristic ‘Phillipps number’. The book label designating this book as part of Esmond de Beer’s Locke Collection may be hiding the number.

Robert Bruce Godward was born in Invercargill in 1916. He gained a Diploma in Fine Arts at the Canterbury School of Art, and trained as a teacher. After the Second World War, when he registered as a conscientious objector, he went overseas and studied psychotherapy in Switzerland. For many years he worked as an art psychotherapist at ‘The Retreat’, a famous Quaker psychiatric hospital in York, England. He returned to Invercargill in 1982, and lived with his sister until his death in 1992. Godward’s important collection of books, many of them splendidly bound, was donated to the Hocken Library. The bookplate, a portrait of Bruce Godward in his youth, was by his friend Rita Angus.

Huddersfield businessman, Sir John Arthur Brooke (1844-1920) lived at Fenay Hall from about 1872. The Brookes were wealthy and made their money from a woollen mill in the area. Brooke amassed a fine library over his lifetime, and after the death of his older brother, Thomas (d. 1908), inherited four Shakespeare First Folios. Brooke’s bookplate (1911) was executed by accomplished designer, George W. Eve (1815-1914) who also produced royal bookplates for the Windsor Castle Library. Upon his death, Sir John’s library was sold by Sotheby’s, in an eight day auction, that yielded over £32,000 (about NZ$3 million). This work by Evelyn was one of the lots.

Hocken marked each book he owned many times, often using an Ex libris bookplate (which he was not allowed to carry); a ‘Hakena’ label, ink stamps, and his signature.
Marking ownership (provenance) by inserting bookplates, book labels, stamps or inscriptions into a book is part of a long tradition, begun in the period of the first printing presses (1450s), when multiple copies of books were produced. Book collectors started to amass libraries, either as a resource for their own intellectual pursuits, or just for show. It became chic to have a library, a collection of books and manuscripts. In later times, it was doubly chic to have a prominent artist design your bookplate.
Many of the first bookplates were based on coats of arms that many aristocrats and landed gentry had the right to bear. Mottoes dominated. As time progressed, and book collecting increased, an increasing number of owners did not have coats of arms to adorn their books. On display is a small fraction of the total held, a wide variety of armorial, pictorial, and modern designs representing a wide range of book collectors. Scotsman James Veitch (1712-1793) was elevated to the title Lord Eliock in 1761. He trained as a lawyer at Edinburgh, Leiden and Halle Universities, and as a judge, it is certainly understandable that he owned this legal work by Johann Gottlieb Heineccius (1681–1741), a German jurist. An acquisition note upper right places him at Halle on 30 April 1735, and gives an indecipherable sum paid for the book. The peerage signalled an event, and Eliock had a bookplate made, pasting it into a book that he had owned for some twenty-six years. His motto is ‘Famam extendimus factis’ (We extend our fame by our deeds).

‘Andw Lavington. His Book. July ye 2d /1730’. This ownership inscription is written on the pages of the back of this Hebrew lexicon. Andrew Lavington was probably studying Hebrew to better understand his Bible. Above his name is a mnemonic written in Latin to help him remember the rules surrounding ‘serviles’ and ‘radicals’, Hebrew letters used in word root formation and the construction of grammatical sentences. It is hard to tell who Lavington was exactly. There is an online record of a so-named man, born in Essex in 1716, who studied medicine in Leiden and worked as a doctor in Tavistock, Devon. Could it have been his book?

Abstract

The breaking up of monastic and university libraries from the Reformation onwards meant a huge number of books flooding on to an open market. Even more books became available through the dissolution of libraries during the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. Special Collections has a number of books and manuscripts salvaged from old European libraries, many of which are identified only by inscription, or an occasional stamp. The Antwerp-based Jean-Gaspard Gevaerts (1593-1666) wrote Electorum Libri III in 1619, following the tradition of scholars Justus Lipsius and Philip Rubens, who wrote their own Electorum Libri I (1580), and II (1608). This is a presentation copy from him to the library of the Holy Augustinian Fathers in Antwerp.

In order to display more bookplates, far more smaller (octavo) format books and much less large format ones have been used. Often found pasted on the front endpaper, these individual design and provenance statements have their own distinct beauty. Please enjoy.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
It is not surprising to find James Tyrrell’s abridged translation of Richard Cumberland’s De Legibus Naturae (1672), entitled A Brief Disquisition on the Law of Nature (1692), in Esmond de Beer’s Locke Collection. After all, Tyrrell (1642-1718) was a close friend of Locke’s. Hidden under the ripped preliminary leaf, there is an ‘Ex dono’ inscription that reveals that this copy was gifted to an unknown friend by Tyrrell himself. And before it was acquired by de Beer, it was owned by ‘William Leader, 27 September 1821, at Cottenham’, near Cambridge. Interestingly, this copy is one of the few that contains de Beer’s penmanship designating it a ‘Locke’ book. One can only presume that this was written before he had his ‘Locke’ labels printed.
