R.A. of London, a well known artist & a friend of Ruskin & Rosetti. It represents a group of Maori chiefs & their wives, the inetrpreter, the Rev. Dr & Mrs Jobson, & Mrs Brames Hall assembled in a room in Wesley’s house, London, & was intended to commemorate the Wesleyan Missionary Jubilee. The Maoris, in charge of the interpreter, visited England to gain an idea of its greatness & resource; the expedition was undertaken with the sanction of the New Zealand Government. The received the most hospitable reception from the Queen & from the highest persons in the Kingdom. The Queen was godmother of a Maori boy born during the visit- November 1863- The picture indicates the meeting of the civilised Maori with the Missionary, to whose labours his advancement is due. It was intended that it should hang in the Mission Hall & Mr Swales, a publisher in Darlington, undertook to publish a jubilee print from it. But the scheme fell through. [Text obscured] … The picture, for which Mr Smetham received one hundred & fifty guineas was sent to New Zealand for sale, the price asked being 200 guineas. After a curious history it finally came into my possession. The portraits, Mrs Smetham informs me, are all careful likenesses. T.M. Hocken, Dunedin 1889.

An account of the resource
This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.

Works by Colin McCahon
Description
An account of the resource
Colin McCahon is recognized as one of New Zealand’s foremost painters for his inventive and visionary contribution to art. He lived from 1919 to 1987, his career spanning four decades of the Twentieth Century. His landscapes reflect his environmental concerns, but also a recognition of the raw essence of a young country, and an ability to portray New Zealand in a unique and iconic way. Religious and moral issues are explored throughout McCahon’s work, as evidenced by his use of Christian imagery. Another of McCahon's interests was poetry, and he became the first New Zealand artist to incorporate words and numbers in his work.

Description
An account of the resource
This is one of McCahon's major works of the mid-1970s, along with the Urewera Mural, the Blind series, and the Parihaka Triptych. It has several motivations and triggers. The primary one is the shining cuckoo's song, spoken of in a Maori poem passed on to McCahon by Ralph Hotere who got it from his father. Such gifts often produced an 'answering hark' from McCahon. In this instance he combined the words of the song with several other strands of sign and image - Roman numerals, window frames, misted landscapes in white, gray and pale lemon, abstract panels a la Mark Rothko in his sombre phase. Other elelments come in to play through the talk around the painting. McCahon said he painted it as a memorial for three recently dead poet friends, R.A.K. Mason, Charles Brasch and James K. Baxter. Critics have pointed out the mixture of Maori, Classical and Christian elements, the latter being carried by the numbers 1 to 14, the number of stations of the cross in Catholic liturgy and a major McCahon motif, especially in the mid-1960s. Caselberg wrote an essay 'Colin mcCahon's Panels, "The Song of the Shining Cuckoo'", published in Islands 18 (1977), along with various texts and facsimiles. McCahon gave the work to the Hocken Library as a memorial to his poet friends. This is made explicit in a letter to John Caselberg:
It should be at Hocken. Could you see to this & if Hocken should want to make it a gift, for gifts: to Baxter, Mason, Brasch, please, do. When I start painting for myself I'll die.

Description
An account of the resource
On mount in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: Native Feast held at Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand. May 11th 1844. Joseph Merrett, artist. T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: An interesting account of this Feast is given in Gov. Fitzroyís despatch to Lord Stanley, dated May the 25th 1844 & printed in P.P. No 247, April 22nd, 1845 p. 8-18. It is copied in part into The NEw Zealander of Nov 8th 1845 V. also the Southern Cross of May 18th 1845. The artist of this primitive watercolour was Joseph Merrett, a former resident of N.S.W. & an interpreter. It was lithographed at home with some alterations which are an improvement on the original. Judging from its rarity, this lithograph, q.v. must have had a scanty sale. Several other of his sketches are in my collection. Latterly he lived near Gisborne & died at Wellington in 1854. T.M. Hocken.; label in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: N.B. The site of the Feast being quite forgotten & frequent inquiry failing to locate it, I devoted some time in March 1908, aided by Mr Allom of Auckland to its discovery. The hill in the foreground of the picture in the foot of Little Rangitoto mow reserved for quarry purposes. Mountain Road runs through it thus forming an additional landmark. This gives a sufficient key to the position. In early days this piece of ground had several small lagoons which have entirely disappeared.

Hocken; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki; note: Mr William Spain was appointed by Lord John Russell to examine the land claims of the New Zealand Company in the Colony. He decided that they were entitled to a Crown Grant for 60,000 acres in Taranaki, a purchase made by them in 1840 from the Waikato Tribe & with Governor Hobson’s consent. The original; owners, however, the Ngatiawa, objected to Mr Spain’s award, & Governor Fitzroy, fearing strife & bloodshed, refused to ratify it to the intense disappointment & disgust of the settlers. Many of them attributed to this vacillation and cowardice, as they chose to call it, the later outbreak in 1859 of the Taranaki War. In this historic picture, Mr T. Forsaith is interpreting the award whilst Messrs Spain, J.T. Wicksteed, the company’s agent, & Colonel Wakefield are under the verandah. The house was the courthouse, the residence of Cap H. King, R.N. the Magistrate, & for long used as the church. T.M.H.
