An account of the resource
Upper right (u.r.) in ink: Sketch map of the Waikato country; through image in ink: [directions, key & location notes]; verso: [letter concluding:] It has been suggested to me that the Illustrated News would be glad to publish the sketch map and perhaps the drawing of Te Awamutu. You might therefore having amused yourself with it as long as you please, forward it to R. Leitch Esq... It will be better therefore that my name should NOT be quoted in reference to either should the paper publish. E.A.W.

Description
An account of the resource
On original sketchbook mount: Pukerimu, Landing Place April 1864; verso in ink: Looking down the Waikato from the landing place, commissariat stores - the steamer coming up with flats in tow…[letter continues]…I read your letters looking on the scene I have attempted, only the crowd was much greater & confusion awful; on sketchbook facing page in ink: No 3. Looking down the Waikato from the landing place and commissariat stores. The steamer cruising up with flats in tow. The river is 100 yards broad here & very swift with an awkward rock in the middle. It winds about a good deal. The banks are high and in curious terraces. Probably it was once broader and less deep. The guns will be launched here in a day of two and terrible stiff work to get them up to the Camp, one mile off, over the plateau to the left of the spectator. Easter Sunday.
