Abstract

Although there are only two volumes of reports in the collection from the voyage of the HMS Samarang (1843-1846), they contain a plethora of amazing coloured plates. These molluscs are from the same species, Argonauta hians (syn. Argonauta gondola), and were gathered in the ‘Eastern Seas’. This plate was drawn by illustrator, naturalist, and conchologist, George Brettingham Sowerby II (d. 1884). The Sowerbys were an English family of naturalists and illustrators prominent in the late 1700s to the 1950s.
