Abstract

The Marine Science Department at the University of Otago is ideally located at 45 degrees south, halfway between the equator and the South Pole. The department maintains research stations on the Otago Peninsula at Portobello, in Fiordland and on Stewart Island; they also regularly visit the Subantarctic Islands aboard the research vessel, Polaris II. Established in 1992, the department’s research themes include ‘Antarctic Science, Biology and Conservation of Marine Mammals, Changing Southern Seas, Managing and Conserving Marine Resources, Marine Discovery, Marine Ecosystems, Ocean Physics and Shelf and Deep-Sea Systems’ – stretching broadly across many scientific disciplines.
