Abstract
Gibbings had a life-long affinity with water and was fascinated by the natural world under its surface. Diving trips to Bermuda and the Red Sea in the late 1930s culminated in Gibbings’s Blue Angels and Whales. On these trips he would dive wearing a large helmet and draw underwater on xylonite, a form of celluloid.
