Alfred E. Coppard is best known for his short stories, including collections such as Adam and Eve and Pinch Me (1921) and Fearful Pleasures (1946). Coppard first knew Hal Taylor, first owner of The Golden Cockerel Press and over the years the Press printed eleven of his works. At the time Coppard’s works were very collectible, and Gibbings produced his Hundredth Story in 1931 as part of a new ‘Guinea Series’. It not only contained engravings by Gibbings, but it was the first book printed in the Golden Cockerel Press typeface, a font specifically designed for the Press by Eric Gill.
