Abstract

William ‘Wullie’ Goodlet was employed as Professor Black’s Laboratory Assistant in the Department of Chemistry from 1881 to 1898, and during this time he worked alongside Mellor. Goodlet’s letter of 1927 offers his old work-mate hearty congratulations on becoming a Royal Society member. Mellor’s reply (not shown) recalls convivial times in the laboratory, including the time that he dyed a white cat ‘all the colours of the rainbow.’ Mellor adds: ‘You will remember we had a visit from the policeman.’
