Abstract

Job Mellor was a typical Yorkshire man: careful, modest and frugal. He had a Victorian respect for learning and was a voracious reader. He usually made his own clothes and also built his own house in Kaikorai Valley. This touching letter to Joseph, who was teaching at Lincoln College at the time, reflects the pride felt in the family on Mellor’s recent successes. Job also quotes Mellor’s friend William ‘Wullie’ Goodlet, who said he ‘was very pleased with your success and you would be at the top of the tree some day.’
