Abstract
One activity that Mellor engaged in outside of work and study was playing chess. Self-taught, he first joined the Dunedin Chess and Draughts Club in 1889. He later joined the Otago Chess Club about 1892. Judged ‘rather weak in attack, but … surprisingly good in defence’, he was considered a player of promise. This letter of congratulations from the ‘Club’ was written on the occasion of his election as Fellow to the Royal Society of London.
