Abstract

Arriving in Dunedin in 1881, Job Mellor worked at the Ross and Glendining Roslyn Worsted and Woollen Mills in Kaikorai Valley. Living in the township of Holyrood, Kaikorai, school for the Mellor children – including Alfred, born 1883 – was Linden School, which became Kaikorai School in 1884. The family were not wealthy, and by the time the name change had occurred, Joseph was already working, having left school in 1882, age 13. This future academic chemist had no secondary school learning; it was all self-directed study. This family portrait was taken about 1891.
