Abstract
‘The Talking Fish’ was but one appellation applied to Henry Smith Fish (1838-1897), MP for Dunedin South and at various times City Mayor. Mellor worked for Fish as a handy boy, a general factotum. He then moved to the George Street boot shop of Simon Brothers, then to McKinlay’s boot factory (established in 1879), and finally about 1888 or 1889 to the boot factory of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, where he and some 250 workers were employed.
