Abstract

Built on the Acropolis in Athens and completed in 438 BC, the Parthenon was a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena, for whom the city is named. Constructed from limestone and marble, the temple housed a statue of Athena holding the goddess of victory, Nike, in her right hand.
