Abstract
This 1913 indenture agreement, typical for the time period, is between Roy Gardner, his father Alfred Gardner and chemist Herbert Wood. (Pharmacists were more commonly known as chemists at the time). Roy Gardner, as a chemist’s apprentice, agreed to work for Herbert Wood for a set amount of hours over a set period of years. In return, Herbert Wood agreed to pay him a set amount and to train him as a chemist. As part of the indenture agreement Roy Gardner also agreed that he would not frequent hotels or billiard saloons during his time as an apprentice. From 1889 an apprenticeship lasted four years and, although changes occurred, over the years the indenture system remained.
