Abstract
Australia has a distinguished position among the countries in which private presses have flourished. Its most important press was Fanfrolico Press, established by John Kirtley and Jack Lindsay. In 1925 they printed a limited edition of Lysistrata by Aristophanes, translated by Jack Lindsay. After moving to London (where they almost matched sales by Nonesuch) another large paper edition of Lysistrata was called for. Like Nonesuch, the partners at Fanfrolico tried to express the individuality of a book, realizing that ‘in fine book production the question is not merely how to print finely, but what to print finely.’ This edition of 725 copies is illustrated by the artist Norman Lindsay.
