A half-bound book has the spine and outer corners covered with leather, while the rest of the sides are covered with cloth or paper, often marbled. If there are no leather corners, the book is said to be quarter bound. This first edition of C. T. Newton’s Travels & Discoveries in the Levant is not only a superb example of a half-bound book, but also offers an excellent sample of the art of marbling. Newton was a British archaeologist who travelled around the Aegean and the coast of Turkey between 1852 and 1859. During his travels he excavated the tomb of Mausolus of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
