Abstract
Zaehnsdorf’s had a reputation for producing first-class bindings by highly skilled craftsmen. Many Zaehnsdorf bindings are housed in libraries and private collections around the world and this volume, a rebound copy of Andreini’s L’Adamo (the inspiration for Milton’s Paradise Lost) is a signed ‘Zahensdorf (sic)’ binding; a small inscription on the flyleaf identifies it as such. Fully bound in brown leather, the front and back covers are decorated with the same, almost geometric, design which includes blind- and gold-tooling; the turn-ins are highly decorated in gold; and the edges of the text block are gilt, which was not only aesthetically pleasing but a feature which helped to keep out the dust.
