Kotzebue was fortunate enough to circumnavigate the globe three times. One objective of his last voyage was to take reinforcements to Kamchatka. However, science was not forgotten, nor the charting of lands dotted about the Pacific. Indeed, after Kotzebue’s efforts, the Northwest coastline of America was fairly well established. He also visited Chile, Tahiti, Pitcairn Island, Tonga, the Marianas, and the Philippines. In 1816, he had discovered the Radack Islands, part of the Marshall Islands. He returned to Otdia, part of the Radack chain, to greet ‘some of the best of Nature’s children’. As depicted in this engraving, he was met with an enthusiastic welcome.
