Abstract

In 1602, the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC) was established, gaining exclusive monopolistic licence for trade in the Far East; the lucrative Spice trade, as well as gold and silk. By 1610, the VOC had a firm foothold in Batavia (Jakarta), and eventually had trading posts in Bengal, Malacca, Siam (Thailand), Formosa (Taiwan), and the Malabar and Coromandel coasts of India. This map details the ‘East India Islands’, including Batavia and Bantam (Java), where ships were despatched into the Pacific.
