Abstract

Diogo Ribeiro (d. 16th August, 1533) was a famous Portuguese-born cosmographer and cartographer who worked for the Spanish and was responsible for providing the charts and navigational instruments that Magellan’s fleet carried on the first circumnavigation of the world in 1519. This map, c. 1532, is thought to be unfinished and while unsigned, is attributed to Ribeiro. It shows the massive expanse of the then uncharted and empty Pacific Ocean to the west of South America. Note the mammals and birds drawn on the continent and the mention of ‘Polus Mundi Antarcticus’ on the lower right hand side of the map.
