Description
In 1611, the Flemish Jesuit missionary Nicolas Trigault reached Peking (Beijing), one year after the death of Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), the founder of the Jesuit mission in China. On his return to Rome, Trigault translated Ricci's memoirs into Latin (De Christiana Expeditione) and wrote about his own experiences: Regni Chinensis descriptio. Trigault returned to China, living at K'aifeng in Honan, and Chiangchou (Shansi), and died there in 1628. This is the first Elzevier edition of 1639; its small format typical from this well-known Dutch family of booksellers and publishers. This edition also contains an extract from Ricci's influential work.
