Lower right (l.r.) in ink: T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Born at Nottingham, Feb. 11th 1792. Entered the Royal Navy in 1806, serving in various successiv vessels, taking part in the last naval engagement of the American war - that between the Endymion and the US frigate, President. Lieutenant in 1815. Attracted to the NZ mission, was ordained priest in 1822. Arrived at the Bay of Islands in Sept 1823 and permanently resided at Paihia, a new station. Laboured with courage and success amongst the natives. Suffered much persecution and calumny owing to his purchase of native lands, and during Heke’s war was accused of treacherous conduct, a baseless charge. Made archdeacon in 1844. Dismissed form the mission in 1850 by his clerical and lay enemies, but after an arduous battle was triumphantly restord in 1854. Died July 16th 1867 at Pakaraka. Buried at Paihia. T.M.H.
