Abstract
William Downie Stewart, Junior, (1878-1949) was born in Dunedin and followed his father into a career in law and politics. In 1913, he became Mayor of Dunedin, and from 1931 until 1933, he served as New Zealand’s Finance Minister, under Prime Minister George Forbes. Stewart was also a scholar, and writer, and published several books. His bookplate was designed by the New Zealand engraver and artist, Ernest Mervyn Taylor (1906-64) and features the motto ‘Never Fear’. Around the bottom of the oval badge is, what appears to be, a rendition of the New Zealand kowhai.
