Abstract

Henry Huth (1815–1878) was an English bibliophile, who had an eye for books in fine condition. He called imperfect books ‘the lepers of a library.’ When he died, his vast collection of books and manuscripts went to his son, Alfred Henry Huth (1850-1910), who gifted some 50 volumes to the British Museum. Much of the Huth Library was sold in 1911 and 1912, realising over £350,000 in sales. The Robin belonged to Huth Senior; his red leather oval bookplate differentiates ownership from the son, who had a gold coloured bookplate. The University Library created the accompanying label in recognition of it being a purchase made through the Friends of the Library.
