Scotsman James Veitch (1712-1793) was elevated to the title Lord Eliock in 1761. He trained as a lawyer at Edinburgh, Leiden and Halle Universities, and as a judge, it is certainly understandable that he owned this legal work by Johann Gottlieb Heineccius (1681–1741), a German jurist. An acquisition note upper right places him at Halle on 30 April 1735, and gives an indecipherable sum paid for the book. The peerage signalled an event, and Eliock had a bookplate made, pasting it into a book that he had owned for some twenty-six years. His motto is ‘Famam extendimus factis’ (We extend our fame by our deeds).
